Plaza de la Independencia is the main square of Jerte and one of the most representative spaces of its historic center. It commemorates the events of the Peninsular War, when French troops led by General Soult set fire to the town in 1809. After the destruction of the settlement, the square was rebuilt and became the social and administrative heart of the village. The square features the traditional Pilón, a historic watering trough once used for livestock, and is surrounded by traditional houses with stone and timber arcades. Today it serves as a central meeting point and hosts many local events, markets, and festivals.

The square is located in the center of Jerte's urban area, a few minutes' walk from any point in the town. Those arriving via the N-110 road can follow the signs for the center or the Iglesia de la Asunción and, once inside the urban core, walk to the Plaza de la Independencia, easily identifiable by its open-space character and its surroundings of traditional buildings.
The plaza can be enjoyed year-round as a place for strolling and meeting, with visits adapted to the valley’s weather conditions. It is particularly lively in summer, during local festivals, and at significant times in Jerte’s cultural calendar, when public events and activities are held in this central space.

During festivals and events the plaza can experience a large influx of people, so it is advisable to pay attention to children and elderly people and to respect the traffic areas. Car access to the immediate surroundings may be limited by road closures or restrictions on holidays, so it is recommended to park on nearby streets or in designated parking lots and continue on foot.
