The San Martín Gorge descends from the Collado del Cardiel at 1,952 meters above sea level until it joins the Jerte River near the ruins of the Santa María hermitage. Along its course it winds between large granite formations and former shepherd shelters, receiving water from several streams such as Lobo Negro and La Chorrera. This natural environment stands out for its rich biodiversity. It is an excellent location for birdwatching, where migratory and forest species such as cranes, geese, kites, eagles, kestrels, warblers and the red rock thrush can be observed. White-throated dippers and grey wagtails are commonly seen along the watercourses, while griffon vultures frequently soar above the area. The gorge also hosts many endemic plants and an important network of pollinators such as butterflies and dragonflies. Among the mammals present, the Iberian ibex can occasionally be seen. As the area is located within the sensitive zone of the Garganta de los Infiernos Nature Reserve, visitors are advised to contact the reserve managers before visiting.
