The Hermitage of Santa María is an old medieval chapel located on the outskirts of Tornavacas, now preserved in a ruined state. It is believed to have been built in the second half of the 14th century, possibly as an act of thanksgiving after the Black Death had been overcome. The building has a rectangular floor plan with a flat apse and preserves remains of its walls and a pointed-arch doorway on the west side. From its position on a small hill it offers wide views over the Jerte Valley and the surrounding mountains.

The hermitage is reached on foot via the local trail SL-CC 29 Ermita de Santa María, a circular route of approximately 4.2 kilometres starting from the urban centre of Tornavacas near the Santa Ana fountain. The path ascends through tracks and narrow lanes between cherry terraces and oak woods, crosses the San Martín gorge and, after passing the Santa María bridge, a short detour of less than 50 metres leads to the ruins of the hermitage.
The SL-CC 29 trail is suitable for visiting throughout the year, with particular appeal in spring and autumn due to blossom and forest colours. In summer, it is advisable to avoid the central hours of the day, while in winter cold or damp conditions may require appropriate equipment.

It is recommended to complete the route with suitable hiking footwear, water and sun protection, following the SL-CC 29 signage and respecting private properties and cultivated areas along the way. At the ruins, observe from a safe distance and avoid climbing on unstable structures.
The remains of the hermitage include unstable walls and structural elements, so climbing or entering the ruins is unsafe. After rainfall, some sections of the path may be slippery or muddy, requiring extra caution, especially on slopes and near the gorge.
