The Hermitage of Our Lady of the Viso is a small 18th-century religious building located on a hill near the village of Barrado. Built in a popular Baroque style, it consists of a single nave covered by a barrel vault and reinforced with exterior buttresses, while the main chapel is topped with a dome. Inside, a Baroque altarpiece houses the image of the Virgin of the Viso, the patron saint of the village. Its elevated position also offers panoramic views over the Jerte Valley and the nearby region of La Vera.

How to get there

The hermitage is located a little more than one kilometer south of Barrado, next to the junction of roads EX-213 and CC-237, on a hill accessible both on foot and by car. From the urban center of Barrado you can take the road that descends to the south, following the signs for the EX-213 until the area where the CC-237 branches off and the hermitage is located, or you can take the pedestrian path that leads to the hill from the town. The approximate coordinates of the hermitage are longitude -5.883982 and latitude 40.075060.

Best season

The hermitage is visitable throughout the year, although the mild conditions of spring and autumn favor both visiting the temple and enjoying the panoramic views. It is especially attractive on August 15, the day of the Assumption and of the main celebrations in honor of the Virgen del Viso, when the hermitage takes on a more prominent role in local religious life.

Combine the visit with a walk through the historic center of Barrado, the church of San Sebastián and other nearby viewpoints in the region. Wear hiking or comfortable footwear, especially if you climb the hill via dirt tracks, and bring water and sun protection on sunny days, as the surroundings are very exposed. It is recommended to respect the religious nature of the temple, remain quiet inside the hermitage and avoid damaging or handling the movable goods and the altarpiece.

Warnings

Access to the hill may involve uneven terrain and stretches of unpaved road, so extra caution should be exercised on rainy days, when the surface can become slippery. Some access routes run close to the EX-213 road and the crossing area with the CC-237, so special attention should be paid to children and you should avoid stopping on the roadway if arriving by car. There are no documented permanent services inside the hermitage, so the availability of water, electricity, or restrooms should not be assumed.
