The Hermitage of Our Lady of Peñas Albas is a Baroque sanctuary built in the 18th century on the outskirts of Cabezuela del Valle. The building features a simple exterior made of granite masonry, typical of rural hermitages in the region. Inside, the church contains a Baroque altarpiece that houses the image of the Virgin of Peñas Albas, the patron saint of the town and one of the most venerated religious figures in the Jerte Valley. The vault is decorated with religious paintings depicting scenes such as the Immaculate Conception, the marriage of Saint Joachim and Saint Anne, and the birth of the Virgin Mary. The hermitage is an important local devotional site where regular religious ceremonies are held, including a monthly mass on the 25th and the main pilgrimage in honor of the patron saint.

How to get there

From the urban area of Cabezuela del Valle you reach the Peñas Albas site via the N-110 road, which crosses the Valle del Jerte and passes by the town. The Peñas Albas site is located approximately 300 meters from the village, on the N-110 in the direction of Jerte, where the regional Tourist Office is also located. Best season

The hermitage can be visited year-round and, according to regional tourist information, has general opening hours from 9:00 to 19:00 with free admission. It is especially interesting to go on March 25, the feast of the Virgen de Peñas Albas and the local pilgrimage day, as well as in spring in general, when the Valle del Jerte is covered with flowering cherry trees.

Take the visit as an opportunity to explore the historic center of Cabezuela del Valle and visit the Water Interpretation Center, also located in the Peñas Albas area. Wear comfortable footwear if you plan to walk around the surroundings of the site and the areas near the river.

Warnings

On the feast of March 25 and other notable days the attendance can increase significantly, so higher occupancy of the access roads and parking areas is to be expected, and it is advisable to arrive in advance. Access is via a national road, so take extra caution when merging, driving and parking, especially in rainy conditions or low visibility.
