La Serrana Cave is a legendary site located in the Sierra de Tormantos mountain range between the villages of Piornal and Garganta la Olla. According to local folklore, the cave was the dwelling place of Isabel de Carvajal, known as “La Serrana de la Vera”, a legendary figure from the 16th century who appears in many traditional stories and ballads. The legend tells that she lived alone in the mountains and lured travellers to her cave before killing them as revenge for past betrayals. Although there is no definitive historical evidence confirming the exact location of her refuge, the area has become a cultural and scenic point of interest along several hiking routes in the Sierra de Tormantos. The surrounding landscape offers panoramic views of both the Jerte Valley and the neighbouring region of La Vera.

The most common access is from Garganta la Olla via the signposted RT-02 “Route to the Serrana’s Cave,” a circular hiking route that climbs along paths and mule tracks to the upper mountain area where the cave and viewpoint are located. From Piornal, longer mountain itineraries such as the “Serrana de la Vera Route” connect both municipalities and pass near the site, and are recommended only for experienced hikers.
The best time to follow the routes to the Serrana’s Cave is in spring and autumn, when temperatures are milder and mountain paths are in better condition. In summer, it is advisable to avoid the central hours of the day due to heat and limited shade in some sections, while in winter extra caution is required due to the possible presence of snow, ice, or fog in higher areas.

It is advisable to check the route in advance, download the track if possible, and avoid hiking alone or under unfavorable weather conditions.
The paths leading to the Serrana’s Cave include steep slopes, mule tracks, and rocky sections where slipping is possible, so they are not suitable for people without good physical condition or with mobility limitations. In fog, heavy rain, or storms, orientation can become difficult and risks increase along exposed ridgelines, so it is preferable to postpone the visit until weather conditions are more stable.
