The Villavieja Celtic Hillfort is an ancient fortified settlement located in the area known as the Riscos de Villavieja, within the Sierra de San Bernabé in the municipality of Casas del Castañar. The site is associated with pre-Roman Celtic or Vetton cultures and occupies a strategic plateau surrounded by steep granite cliffs overlooking the Jerte Valley. The natural defensive features of the terrain were reinforced by a large perimeter wall, traces of which can still be found today. Archaeological remains inside the enclosure suggest the presence of circular dwellings and other structures related to daily life in the settlement. Its elevated position provided wide visibility over the valley and the natural routes connecting the mountains with the plains near Plasencia. Today the site is valued both for its historical significance and its impressive landscape.

Access is on foot via hiking routes that start from Casas del Castañar and ascend through the Sierra de San Bernabé towards the Villavieja cliffs. The routes follow forest tracks and mountain trails leading up to the hillfort, so it is recommended to use detailed route descriptions or reliable GPS tracks and to begin from the village centre or designated recreational areas.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons to visit the hillfort, when temperatures are mild and the chestnut and oak woodlands display their most vibrant colours. In summer, it is advisable to avoid the central hours of the day, while in winter routes may be affected by cold, rain or fog.

The terrain includes steep slopes, loose rocks and exposed areas on the upper cliffs, making it unsuitable for those without mountain hiking experience. In conditions of strong wind, heavy rain or dense fog, extra caution is required and postponing the visit should be considered.
