The Calleja de los Bueyes is the oldest quarter in the town of Jerte and one of the areas of greatest historical value in the urban centre. This small cluster of narrow streets and traditional houses is the only part of the town that survived the fire started by French troops during the Peninsular War in 1809. It preserves fine examples of mountain vernacular architecture, with stone-and-timber houses, traditional timber-framed structures, arcades, and carved stonework such as coats of arms and worked lintels. The quarter also contains one of the oldest houses in Jerte, probably dating from the eighteenth century or even earlier. Today it is a picturesque enclave that reflects the town’s rural past and historical identity.

The alley is located in the historic centre of Jerte and is accessed on foot from Plaza de la Independencia or from nearby streets, following the network of traditional narrow lanes. It is a pedestrian passage with no direct vehicle access and is typically visited as part of a walk through the town’s historic core.
It can be visited throughout the year as part of an urban route through Jerte, being especially pleasant in spring and autumn when temperatures are milder and the town is more active. In summer, the narrowness of the alley provides some shade and shelter from the sun.
